SURVEY RESULTS Bajamar Protections - Rule of Conduct No.2: Noise & Disturbances For the first time in the history of Bajamar, a survey was carried out to determine if Rule of Conduct No.2, one of the most controversial rules of conduct, should be modified or not. While we are very grateful to the residents who took the time to read the article and exercise their right to vote, we regret that the vast majority show no interest in participating in decision-making on important issues that affect our community. To the question, Would you like to modify Rule 2: Noise & Disturbances? 94% didn't respond, 3.6% voted NO and 2.3% voted YES. |

In Brief: Mexican Independence by: Maria Luisa Elizundia The
Independence of Mexico began on September 16, 1810, when in the early morning
of that day, the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, one of the most important
protagonists in the history of Mexico, made what is now known as Grito de
Dolores, inciting Mexicans to fight for their independence from the Spanish
rule. Although
the movement for independence and political instability continued for 11 more
years, since Spain recognized the independence of Mexico until September
1836, the Day of Mexican Independence is celebrated every year on September
16 in commemoration of the fight that began in 1810. The

festivities to celebrate the Independence of Mexico include lighting and
decorating public spaces with decorations in the national colors of green,
white and red. On the night of September 15, people gather to wait for the
arrival of midnight when the Grito de Dolores is re-enacted, and the
heroes who fought for the homeland and freedom are remembered and honored.
The fiesta ends with the singing of the national anthem. Traditional

By law, the sale of beer, wine, and liquor is suspended at stores and supermarkets across Mexico from midnight on September 15th until midnight on September 16th. If you plan to purchase alcoholic beverages for parties or celebrations, plan ahead by making your purchases before midnight on September 14th. |

Pacific from Ensenada to Australia in 240 Days! by: Bajamar Rotary Club Michelle Lee rowed 5000 kilometers over 68 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean, officially becoming the first Australian woman to row solo across any ocean in the process. Now, having just been named the Australian Geographic Adventurer of the Year, she wants to see other women pursuing their dreams. “Currently there are 27 male recipients of the Australian Geographic Society Awards and only 5 females and I want to inspire the girls to help even up the score,” she says. Lee was 46 when she left the Canary Islands for Antigua, rowing 14 hours a day and encountering wild weather, huge swells, isolation, sea sickness, salt sores and more along the way. But despite the physical and mental challenges, she says the experience enriched her life. “My struggles also go down in my diary with the good bits. They gave me a sense of triumph and I wouldn’t change a thing,” she says on the journey, noting one particular day of quiet on the water, with no wind or ripples. “The silence was deafening. It was magical, eerie, and precious.” “I now know that the mind rules the body and, when you think there is nothing left in the tank, there is at least another 35 days. Now, at 51 years of age, she has crossed the Pacific Ocean in 240 days, alone and without assistance. She left from Marina Coral Ensenada, Baja California, August 8, 2022, at 1:30 in the morning, arriving to Australia 240 days later. Rotario de Bajamar Michelle Lee remó 5,000 kilómetros durante 68 días para cruzar el Océano Atlántico, convirtiéndose oficialmente en la primera mujer australiana en remar sola a través de cualquier océano en el proceso. Ahora, tras haber sido nombrada Aventurera Geográfica Australiana del Año, quiere ver a otras mujeres persiguiendo sus sueños. "Actualmente hay 27 hombres que han recibido los premios de la Sociedad Geográfica Australiana y sólo cinco mujeres, y quiero inspirar a las niñas para que ayuden a igualar la puntuación", dice. Lee tenía 46 años cuando salió de las Islas Canarias hacia Antigua, remaba 14 horas al día y se topó con un clima salvaje, enormes olas, aislamiento, mareos, llagas de sal y más en el camino. Pero a pesar de los desafíos físicos y mentales, dice que la experiencia enriqueció su vida. “Mis luchas también quedan anotadas en mi diario con las cosas buenas. News on Dues by: Deb Smith Seventeen years ago, it was 2006. What did you pay for a car in 2006? What did you pay for a house in 2006? And yet in 2023, you still pay the same dues you did in 2006 – 17 years ago. If you’re familiar with other homeowners’ associations, have your dues there remained the same for 17 years? Many homeowners’ associations have the mindset to raise dues US$5 a year ‘just in case’. If the BHOA had done that, you’d now be paying $220 monthly. Your staff and Board take their financial responsibility very seriously. The main factor affecting this year’s projected shortfall is: The peso. Budgeted at 18.5, for years the peso was at 20, so that helped a lot. When the 2023 budget was planned in November of 2022, the peso was just under 20. It dropped shortly thereafter to the 16.5 range. It is currently trending upwards, but the exchange rate is obviously beyond our control. Since our budget is figured in US$, the peso fluctuation has a big impact. In many past years, we have been very close on our budget, but by tightening our belts, managed to end in the black. In November 2022, planning for 2023, the Board seriously considered raising dues as projections indicated, but, after 3 years of hardships brought on by COVID, chose a one-year grace. Right or wrong, that’s what was decided. Our CC&Rs Article VI Funds and Assessments deal with dues calculation in Section 6.02. We entered 2023 knowing we would undoubtedly be facing dues increase for 2024. It’s painful, but let’s face it, we’ve enjoyed an unprecedented long run of extremely low dues. How much will dues go up? That depends somewhat on the peso, which is currently trending in our favor. Be assured that your Board will keep dues as low as possible. Remember, they’re your neighbors. Hopefully this information will help you understand what is going on with the dues. Let’s call this what it is – ABOUT TIME. Two things to consider – serving on the Board – your expertise is needed. And paying your dues if you currently do not. Thank you. |

las Cuotas por: Deb Smith Hace diecisiete años, era 2006. ¿Cuánto pagaste por un coche en 2006? ¿Cuánto costaba una casa en 2006? En Bajamar, sin embargo, en 2023 sigues pagando las mismas cuotas que en 2006, hace 17 años. Si estás relacionado con otras asociaciones de propietarios, ¿siguen tus cuotas siendo las mismas que hace 17 años? Muchas asociaciones de propietarios aumentan las cuotas en US$5 por año ‘por si acaso’. Si la BHOA hubiera hecho lo mismo, ahora estarías pagando $220 mensuales. Empezamos el 2023 sabiendo que enfrentaríamos un aumento de cuotas para 2024. Es doloroso, pero seamos realistas, hemos disfrutado de un largo periodo de cuotas muy bajas. ¿Cuánto subirán las cuotas? Eso depende en cierta medida del peso, que actualmente tiene una tendencia a nuestro favor. Ten la seguridad de que tu Consejo Directivo mantendrá las cuotas lo más bajas posible. Recuerda, ellos también son tus vecinos. Esperamos que esta información sea útil para comprender qué está pasando con las cuotas. Dos cosas a considerar: servir en el Consejo Directivo – tu experiencia es necesaria. Y si actualmente no lo haces, por favor paga tus cuotas. Gracias. |
